The Supreme Court today gave three months’ final deadline to the states and Union Territories to frame laws to make the registration of marriages compulsory, as a majority of them have failed to comply with its earlier order of Feb. 2006 in this regard.

Maoists kill 10 jawans in chhattisgarh
At least 10 paramillitary jawan and a driver were killed on Thursday in a landmine blast triggered by Maoists in Dantewada district of chhattisgarh, police said.

Two armed youths reportedly looted an Indica car along with cash and mobile from its owner near Kalinga village yesterday.

Haj flights cancelled due to weather
Two more Haj flights were cancelled due to poor visibility at the airport here today, while three chaired flights, to carry pilgrims to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, had been rescheduled.
According to executive officer of the Jammu and Kashmir state Huj Committee, both flights of Wednesday, which were rescheduled for today, were cancelled today also as these could not land at Srinagar airport due to poor visibility. The pilgrims of these flights would depart Jeddah tomorrow, the executive officer said here. Accordingly the pilgrims of two flights who earlier were scheduled to leave Srinagar for Jeddah today would be flown on December 1, said the officials of the Haj Committee.

Army jawan commits suicide
An Army jawan allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with a service rifle in Jammu district today. Vijay Sohar fired at himself in 4th Signal unit in the Birpur area of Jammu district. Determined to put the state on the road to self- sufficiency in power by the end of her term Chief Minister Mayawati today inaugurated and laid the foundation stones of mega power projects costing about Rs 6,168 crores. Mayawati said under the 11th Five Year Plan an action plan for the generation of 10,000 MW was being prepared which would require an investment of Rs 60,000 crores. Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen On Friday said she was withdrawing some controversial lines from her autobiographical novel Dwikhandita as those evoked strong protests from “a section of people in India”. “I am withdrawing controversial lines in Dwikhandita, written in 2002 with the memory of Bangladesh in the 1980s when military threw out secularism in the country. I wrote the book in support of the people who defended secular values. I had no intention to hurt anybody’s sentiment” she said over phone from an undisclosed location.
